NY primary voters want Hillary, Rudy; cold on Obama

I guess the results of this poll from Siena College shouldn't be surprising. In short, Rudy Giuliani and Hillary Clinton have big leads among registered voters in our great state. Rudy Giuliani having a 47-20 lead over John McCain is to be expected. Rudy has the home-state advantage here. What I found mildly surprising is that Clinton leads Barack Obama, her nearest competitor, 58-11. I wouldn't have expected Clinton to have such a lead even in her *ahem* home state over the current media darling. What's even slightly more surprising is that Clinton carries a commanding 78-13 lead over Obama among African American Democrats. I guess it pays to be married to our first Black President. Expect those numbers to change as the months go by. Showing that merely being from New York is not enough, our former governor came in with just 5% among Republicans. To quote Siena New York poll spokesman Steven Greenberg, "...after 12 years as governor, only one in 20 New York Republicans think Pataki should be president." Don't count me among them.

Other points of interest in the poll:

  • Eliot Spitzer has a 75% approval rating
  • Joe Bruno has a 17% approval rating
  • Shelly Silver has a 20% approval rating
Again, no big surprises, but interesting nonetheless. We'll see how long Spitzer's honeymoon lasts.
